Player Types
At Deadlight, you play an individual who was summoned to participate in the adventure of a lifetime.
All players were invited to board the Redemption by an unknown benefactor who signed their letter “The Old Albatross.” All players have boarded the Redemption under the pretense of a luxury cruise but, personally, have ulterior motives. These motives depend on their player category.

All players are from one of two different categories: Criminal or Supernaturalist. These are mutually exclusive categories.
Criminals
Criminals are individuals who were hired to conduct a heist on one of the many rare artifacts allegedly housed on board the Redemption. Criminals are aware they will be working with other hired personnel, but they may not necessarily know who that is at game start. Criminals have no idea the Redemption is haunted, but are keenly aware rival organizations may be pursuing the same materials.
Criminals do not have to be “evil.” You can choose to play a criminal who is hoping to return an illegally plundered artifact and has agreed to work with The Old Albatross out of convenience.
Supernaturalist
Supernaturalists have both an interest in and facility for the paranormal. They are aware that the Redemption is a notoriously haunted ship and, because of their abilities, have been hired to conduct a paranormal investigation. At game start, they are aware they are working with other supernaturalists, but they may not know who those people are. Supernaturalists are aware of the ship’s haunted past, but they have no idea that it is also a hotbed of active criminal activity.
Importantly!
Criminals and Supernaturalists are not aware of one another’s motives on the ship. You may come into game with other players, but–if you come from separate walks of life–the revelation of your true motives will be a surprise. (For example, two players may come in as best friends, one of whom is a criminal and one of whom is a supernaturalist. This would be a revelation to explore in-game.)
